Dr Markus Karner
SMU Academic Director, Executive Development
Dr Markus Karner has been teaching interdisciplinary courses on complexity theory, ecology, evolution, and strategy at SMU since 2005. He holds a PhD in Life Sciences from the University of Paris and an MSc from the University of Vienna, Austria. Dr Karner also held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Southern California and at the University of Hawaiʻi.
His research used molecular biology tools in microbial ecology in the Mediterranean, Pacific Ocean, and Antarctica. He was awarded the U.S. National Science Foundation Medal for Services in Antarctica. Dr Karner published his original research in the prestigious journal Nature other peer-reviewed publications and wrote a textbook on biological models for business. His research was funded by the National Science Foundations of Austria and the U.S., and by the Commission of the European Communities.

Dr Flocy Joseph
SMU Programme Director, Executive Development
Dr Flocy Joseph joined SMU in 2012 with the Human Capital Leadership Institute as the country lead for India, servicing the Indian MNCs. Her role encompasses designing, delivering and facilitating executive development programs for industry-specific and customised programs for the university’s tier corporate clients. She earned her PhD in Responsible Leadership at SMU.
Dr Flocy is a certified trainer in delivering the Global Mindset Inventory and the Facet 5 personality tools. Joseph has authored various case studies on leadership, some of which have been published to global recognition. She has also led a research paper on “Cultural Transformation in the Digital World”, authored an award-winning paper on “Beta Leadership” and co-authored the book Living the Corporate Purpose: Insights from Companies in Asia.

Dr Arnoud De Meyer
Former SMU President, Professor Emeritus of Operations Management
Dr Arnoud De Meyer is an internationally recognised researcher and academic leader with 35+ years of experience in top international institutions in Europe and Asia. He served as President of SMU from 2010–2018. Dr De Meyer earned his PhD in Business Administration and Management from Ghent University, Belgium.
His research centers on R&D and innovation management, manufacturing strategy and international management. He currently serves as Director of Viva Energy Pty Ltd, Australia. Dr De Meyer has been a member of several government panels, management and non-profit boards in the UK, Belgium and Singapore, including the Board of the Singapore Symphony Group.

Dr Shantanu Bhattacharya
SMU Professor of Operations Management
Prior to teaching at SMU, Dr Bhattacharya was an Associate Professor of Technology and Operations Management and an Assistant Professor of Technology and Operations Management at INSEAD. He also taught at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr Bhattacharya holds a PhD in Management from the University of Texas at Austin and an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana State University.
His teaching and research interests include technology management, operations management, supply chain management and new product and services development. Dr Bhattacharya is a member of INFORMS, has delivered several presentations on managing uncertainty in the high-technology industry, and had his research featured in Management Science.

Dr Les Buckley
SMU Affiliated Faculty of Strategic Management
Dr Les Buckley has served as an affiliate faculty of strategic management at SMU since 2015, a role focused on executive development and training. He is also the academic director of an International Enterprise Singapore-sponsored SMU course on Business Effectiveness in Asia. Dr Buckley holds a PhD in History from Columbia University, New York.
Dr Buckley has 25+ years of operational, manufacturing, supply chain and commercial experience in a range of Asia Pacific countries. He has been an audit committee and board member of Singapore Government’s National Environment Agency, a board member of the Football Association of Singapore and a member of Singapore Compact for Corporate Social Responsibility’s Board. Currently, he serves as a council member and advisor to Singapore Institute for International Affairs—a world-ranked geo-political and environmental think tank.
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded a verified digital certificate by Singapore Management University.
